The Southworth & Hawes studio was
a family affair. Albert’s sister, Nancy, and
wife, Louise, assisted female patrons with arranging
their dresses. Josiah Hawes married Nancy in 1849.
She and her other brother, Asa, helped Hawes maintain
the business while Albert was in California between
1849 and 1851 during the Gold Rush. Josiah and Nancy’s
three children, Alice, Marion, and Edward, grew up
well acquainted with the studio and the value of its
legacy, which they preserved upon their father’s
death in 1901.
