George Eastman House International Museum of Photography
& Film in Rochester, N.Y. and International Center
of Photography announced in 2000 a formal alliance,
principally to make their collections and programs
more widely available to the public. This joint venture’s
unprecedented success has set a standard for collaborations
in the museum world, garnering recognition nationally
and internationally.
A key component of the alliance has been the jointly
organized series “New Histories of Photography.”
A total of nine exhibitions have been mounted for
the series, beginning with Daguerreotypomania! in
2000 through the exhibition currently on view, Forget
Me Not: Photography and Remembrance. These exhibitions
have presented new approaches to the history of the
medium, drawing on George Eastman House’s and
ICP’s collections of photographs and documents
and the ongoing research of the museum’s curators.
The current alliance project, Young America: The Daguerreotypes
of Southworth & Hawes, is a major exhibition of
more than 160 daguerreotypes by famed Boston photographers
Southworth & Hawes. Featured are daguerreotypes
and artifacts from George Eastman House plus thirty-seven major
institutions and collectors. This exhibition is the
most ambitious alliance project to date.
