Clark’s first film follows a teen through the course of a day as he pursues sexual conquests, hangs out with his drug-using skateboarding buddies, and is chased by a former girlfriend who has discovered she is HIV-positive. The film’s gritty documentary style and graphic portrayal of teenage sex and violence unnerved many audiences, and it remains highly controversial.

Clark’s version of the crime-spree road movie involves an older couple taking a teenage couple under their wing to commit drug robberies. It evolves into a coming-of-age story of the young man, who is forced to survive the violence and fatal drug addiction swirling around him.

Bully is based on the true story of a teen’s murder in Hollywood, Florida by a group of his peers. By showing these bored, aimless kids arriving at the scheme as they while away their drug-riddled hours, Clark exposes the dangerous ennui of suburban America.
