Gabriel Valansi documents the curious things he encounters on nocturnal wanderings in Buenos Aires. Evidence of mysterious human activities, his subjects include an isolated dress in a cellophane bag, a parking meter inexplicably wrapped in cloth, and shoes and a shoe box scattered on a sidewalk. Through mood, rather than detail, these untraditional documents evoke both the narrative potential and emptiness of urban waste.

Born in Buenos Aires in 1956, Gabriel Valansi is a self-taught photographer who began working as a professional photographer and columnist in 1978 for national and foreign publications. Since 1981, he has also worked as a photography instructor. In 1983, he received the Parisian Grand Prize in the Arts for his illustrations of the writings of Jorge Lu’s Borges. He is currently a photography critic and is preparing his first book of stories. Valansi has juried and curated numerous group exhibitions for galleries. His work has been included in group exhibitions in Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico.
