CHIM: A web biography of David Seymour

Photograph by Werner Bischof, 1945
Swiss born Werner Bischof (1916-1954) started his career as a painter before moving on to photography. At first he specialized in and perfected a graphic; subtle use of light and shade on inanimate objects, but eventually became compelled to bear witness to the human suffering of the post-war world. In 1949 he joined Magnum, and photographed people in many parts of the world -- India, Korea, Vietnam, the United States, Eastern and Western Europe. He died in the Peruvian Andes at the age of 38. In 1966, a Werner Bischof/Robert Capa/David Seymour Memorial Fund was founded. Subsequently, this became the International Fund for Concerned Photography, and in 1974 the International Center of Photography. In November 1986, a retrospective exhibition opened at the Kunsthaus, Zurich, before travelling to the United States.
